Three local high school students have been awarded a total of $1,500 in college scholarships from the Chenette Scholarship Fund.

Over the past decade, the foundation has provided nearly $14,000 worth of college scholarships to 30 students at area high schools.

“I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since we started awarding local college scholarships,” said Justin Chenette, York County Commissioner and scholarship founder. “Every year I continue to be impressed by the caliber of our scholars and their commitment to lifting up those around them. I’m proud to help encourage these young leaders along their journey towards service and success.”

The foundation’s Leadership Scholarship is awarded each year to students at Thornton Academy, Old Orchard Beach High School, and Bonny Eagle who demonstrate civic leadership along with a strong commitment to community service on and off campus. This year’s recipients are Sam Drummey, Charlotte LaSalle, and Samuel Coldwell.

Sam Drummey is the 2025 scholarship recipient from Thornton Academy. Sam was Student Council Vice President, hosting food drives for the Saco Food Pantry, Environmental Club Co-President, and a student representative on local city committees dealing with transportation and sustainability. As a volunteer with Maine Youth Action’s Legislative Team and MaineTrans Net, Sam used advocacy and political organizing to advance causes he cares about. He participated in Model United Nations, Speech Team, and National Honor Society. His high school experience culminated in being selected as one of just two students in the entire state to become a delegate to the highly competitive U.S. Senate Youth Program. Sam will be attending Columbia University this fall, with a focus on economics, political science, and human rights.

Charlotte LaSalle is the 2025 scholarship recipient from Old Orchard Beach High School. Charlotte uplifts others through a passion for music. Charlotte took on a leadership role on campus when she became a drum major in the marching band, performing in the community for Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day events. As a member of Rotary’s Interact Club, Charlotte helped collect donations and toys to make sure local children had a bright holiday season through Toys for Tots. Charlotte will be attending Suffolk University this fall where she will be majoring in Biology.

Samuel Coldwell of Hollis is the 2025 scholarship recipient from Bonny Eagle High School. Samuel is recognized for his efforts volunteering with the Kiwanis’s Key Club on campus, where he helped with the Special Olympics. He also excelled in sports as the captain of the varsity soccer team and as a member of the tennis team. Samuel will attend the University of Maine Farmington this fall with an interest in History.
